AdeleAdkins was raised by a young single mother in various working-class neighbourhoods of London. She loved to sing contemporary pop songs when she was a kid and was able to play the guitar and clarinet. She came across Etta an early-mid-century rhythm-and- blues performer, during her teens and began to pursue a career an artist. As she worked on her skills at a government-funded secondary school for the performing arts, a friend started posting songs Adkins wrote and recorded onto the social networking Web site Myspace. Adkins was soon noticed by record labels and was signed an agreement with XL Recordings in 2006.
